Which is the hard part? Getting into college, or staying there? The tribulation faced by many a college student from every walk of life. The B.I.G. (Black Intelligent Gentlemen) program at Minnesota State University Mankato was created to be a group that would break down stereotypes between cultures, encourage black men to strive for self-improvement and professionalism and keep students at MSU. Matnique Williamson, the founder of B.I.G. and a senior majoring in corrections, was approached by the interim Dean of Institutional Diversity at MSU Henry Morris, who is doing his part to turn around the fact that there are more black men in jail than there are in college. He believes African American men are not thriving like they should be, and that more “black togetherness” is key to their success.
