Finding Self

Another day at work and as usual it’s never a dull moment working with these youths, from the random jokes we share during lunch hour to managing complex issues that have caused barriers along their journey. But, after facilitating this longer than usual peer counseling session I’m left pondering the question: “what is the best or real you?” Because the truth of the matter is we do not just drift into becoming the best version of ourselves.

The “me” that many of us pretend to be is a stance that keeps us from
standing in the truth of who we are – a very dangerous place that keeps us
moving in a type of cycle, seeking things and people to dictate who we
are. Pretending to be someone we are not, while covered under layers of “stuff” that we claim is us, is why we feel tired and even embarrassed with the image that stares back at us in the mirror. If I am ever going to become the me that God has designed me to be, I have to start by being honest about the me I am. For it seems as though many of us have become comfortable living out the
dreams of others, or confident in the characters we have created by playing
dress-up in the wardrobes of our personalities. Jesus had much to say about death to self, and on the journey to the you God designed you to be, you will have some dying to do. But that kind of death is death to a lesser self, a false self, so that a better and nobler self can come to life.

The “me” that many of us pretend to be is a stance that keeps us from
standing in the truth…

I want to challenge you to dig deep within, and boldly present to the world the gems of the “best” and “real” you. I know it might hurt, but day after day thousands of men excavate through layers of the Earth searching for the best and most rare forms of diamonds to present to the world, and if my bible is correct…according to 2 Corinthians 4:7-8, which states: “ 7 However, we possess this precious treasure[the divine Light of the Gospel] in [frail, human] vessels of earth, that the grandeur and exceeding greatness of the power may be shown to be from God and not from ourselves. 8 We are hedged in (pressed) on every side[troubled and oppressed in every way], but not cramped or crushed; we suffer embarrassments and are perplexed and unable to find a way out, but not driven
to despair”.

God designed you to flourish “so that” you could be part of his redemptive project in ways that you otherwise could not. He wants you to flourish “so that” people can be encouraged, gardens can be planted, music can be written, sick can be healed, or companies and business can thrive in ways they otherwise would not. When you fail to become the person God designed, the world misses out on the gift you were made to give. For Proverbs 18:16 states: “A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men. Quite frankly, I’m waiting on the arrival of the “best” and “real” you and tired trying to navigate through the layers of “stuff” that you claim to be you…really, you ain’t suffocating yet because even diamonds like to be showcased!

For the betterment of yourself excavate that treasure within you, for your community, family and peers are waiting – you might be the solution to a problem they have been looking for.
