Seattle Seahawks rookie quarterback Russell Wilson beat out recently acquired Matt Flynn to be named the Seahawks Week 1 starter. Russell has impressed coaches from day one of mini-camp, and as a result was able to leapfrog Flynn and Tavaris Jackson on the depth charts.
Wilson has been outstanding this entire preseason, so much so that Carroll gave Wilson the start Friday night against Kansas City after Flynn sat out with a bad elbow. Wilson responded by completing 13-of-19 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns, adding 58 yards rushing for good measure.
His outstanding performance against the Chiefs first-string defense has most Seahawks fans excited about Wilson’s potential as a starter. Head coach Pete Carroll had this to say when questioned by the media on his decision:
“It’s been a very exciting competition that has gone on, and Russell has taken full advantage of his opportunities and has done everything that we have asked for on the field and more than what you guys could know off the field in meeting rooms and with our players and how he’s represented,” said Carroll. “He’s earned this job.”
Wilson put together more dynamic plays than Flynn this preseason, and when he showed he could do the same against first-string defenses the job was his. According to Carroll, Flynn is extremely disappointed by the news.
“I’m disappointed for him too because I know how much he wants it,” Carroll said. Flynn was the Seahawks biggest free agent acquisition this offseason, as Aaron Rodgers former backup ventured out in search of a starting spot.
Flynn signed a three-year, $26 million deal with Seattle this offseason, but was unable to match the play of Wilson.
Many experts, including ESPN’s draft guru Mel Kiper Jr., didn’t expect much from Wilson due to his 5-foot-11 frame. Before Wilson was named the starter in Seattle there were no starting quarterbacks in the NFL listed at less than six feet tall.
Wilson stands to be one of five rookie starting quarterbacks this season, marking the first time since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970.
