: Where are you from and what’s your personal experience living here in Toronto?
: Born and raised in Toronto. I didn’t really live a life that most people have lived. Some are unfortunate and some are wealthy from birth, I was more in the middle. Growing up I was a bit of a quiet child who enjoyed playing video games like any other child. Played basketball for most of my life as well and pursued that as my main goal back when I was 10. Being raised by both parents helped me understand the basics in life and taught me about respect. Seeing and exploring the world helped me realize what to, and what not to do. Now I’m 24, a father of two, and a business owner. The main thing that keeps me going are both my children. I do everything for them so they can live a much more prosperous life than I did, and hopefully, the message lives on to my grand children, and great grand children etc.
:What made you decide to become a barber? And what did your friends think about your new found talent?
: Barbering was a thing that I took up in high school because I couldn’t afford a haircut every week. It was actually one of my closest high school friends, who is also a barber, that used to take care of me, but ended up being quite far from where I lived. I never took hair styling serious until my third year of actually working. A lot of my friends are supportive, although it took my family a little while longer. Even with all of the struggle when I first started, it took me a long while to realize that this is the career that was made for me.
: Have you enjoyed the entertainment industry in Toronto so far and how did you get into grooming the ‘who’s who’ of Toronto?
: Meeting people is one of my favorite things to do, and networking is the most important trait you need in this industry. Being recognized as one of the most known barbers in Toronto is an accomplishment that I can be proud of. Working with a lot of entertainers is something not many people are able to do, which makes this opportunity special to me. Working with artists such as A-Game has helped me grow as a barber and a businessman. They have helped me enormously as they are my main outlet to the entertainment industry. Without their help, and the support of some others, I wouldn’t have accomplished what I have. Some A-list artists that I have cut are Drake, Cory Gunz, Tinie Tempah, and Down With Webster, just to name a few.
: What’s your position on WBMW: what do you think black men want?
: I wouldn’t say just “black men” but men in general are in need of a hairstylist who can consistently give them a look that suits the lifestyle they live every single visit. I mean, a barbershop is not only a place to get a haircut, but it is a place that is therapeutic to men. Most barbers are known to be listeners, who every day hear about personal issues, and this is what a client appreciates most other than the haircut. Aside from providing a good service, my main goal is to help people understand ways for better living, whether it be motivation or personal relationships with other human beings, to make this a happier environment.
: How does it feel to be a young entrepreneur in Toronto
: A young entrepreneur is rare to find these days. Not many people are willing to take the risks and sacrifices that you need to become successful. A lot of people “just live” or “go with the flow”. My family is a well accomplished one, but nobody has yet to own their own business or be a leader in a business. It’s a good feeling when you look at yourself now, and look at yourself when you first started and see the growth and who or what you have become. All in all, I feel great about the choices I have made, and wish there were more entrepreneurs so issues such as poverty would not exist.
